Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay in Mexico as a tourist?

Up to 180 days. The immigration officer at the airport or border decides how many days you get and records it on your entry stamp or digital record, and it is often fewer than 180. The number you were given is the one that counts.

Can I extend my tourist stay in Mexico?

Generally no. A visitor stay cannot be extended as a tourist. To stay longer you need to leave and re-enter (with no guarantee of a new stay) or apply for residency at a Mexican consulate abroad.

What happens if I overstay in Mexico?

You must regularise your status with INM or pay a fine when you leave. The fine for an expired visitor document ranges from 20 to 100 UMA days, about MXN 2,346 to 11,731 in 2026, and a regularisation can also cost MXN 1,702.39 plus a new document fee. Overstaying can make future entries harder.

Does the day I arrive count?

This calculator counts the day you arrive as day 1, which gives the earliest likely last day. Check your stamp or record for the date the officer wrote.
