Frequently asked questions
How much is a temporary resident card in Mexico in 2026?
MXN 11,140.74 for 1 year, 16,693.36 for 2 years, 21,142.58 for 3 years and 25,057.82 for 4 years. These are the government fees in the Ley Federal de Derechos for 2026, paid at a bank before your INM appointment.
Why are INM fees so much higher in 2026?
A reform of the Ley Federal de Derechos published in November 2025 roughly doubled migration fees from 1 January 2026. A 1-year temporary card went from about MXN 5,570 in 2025 to MXN 11,140.74.
How much does it cost to switch from temporary to permanent residency?
MXN 1,702.39 for the change of status plus MXN 13,578.96 for the permanent card, MXN 15,281.35 in total for each person.
Does family unity reduce the fees?
Yes. The law halves the residency card fee when your residency is based on family unity or a job offer. Other fees, such as the change of status, are not halved.
What about the visa fee at the consulate?
If you apply from abroad, you first pay a consular visa fee (MXN 913.15 in the law, about USD 54 to 56 at US consulates). You then exchange the visa for your card at INM within 30 days of arriving and pay the card fee.
Do fees change every year?
Yes, they can change each January. This calculator shows the 2026 amounts; we update it when the new year's figures are published.
