Frequently asked questions

How much income do I need for temporary residency in Mexico in 2026?

About MXN 79,771 a month after tax, in each of the last 6 months. That is 680 times the daily UMA of MXN 117.31. Instead of income you can show savings or investments with an average balance of about MXN 1,344,373 over the last 12 months (11,460 UMA days).

How much do I need for permanent residency as a retiree?

A pension of about MXN 133,733 a month after tax (1,140 UMA days) for the last 6 months, or savings with an average balance of about MXN 5,378,664 over the last 12 months (45,850 UMA days). For permanent residency the income must be a pension, not a salary.

What is the UMA and why did the amounts change?

The UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización) is a reference value published by INEGI every January; the 2026 value of MXN 117.31 a day applies from 1 February 2026. A rule published in the Official Gazette on 25 July 2025 switched the residency amounts from the minimum wage to the UMA, which lowered them. Some consulates still publish older figures.

Why does each consulate give a different dollar amount?

The rule is set in pesos. Each consulate converts it at its own exchange rate and updates its page at different times, so the dollar figure can differ by 10% or more. Always use the figure on your own consulate's page, which is why this calculator lets you add a safety margin.

Do I need both income and savings?

No. You need one or the other: enough monthly income for the last 6 months, or enough average savings over the last 12 months.

How much extra do I need for my spouse or children?

The rules add 220 UMA days, about MXN 25,808, for each family member applying with you. A spouse who meets the amount alone can also apply on their own.
